LeBron James Rookie Cards Shine at Leland’s Auction

For nearly two decades, a prized LeBron James rookie card remained hidden in a safety deposit box, waiting for its moment to shine at Leland’s Summer Classic Auction. Acquired for just under $3,000 in 2004, this 2003-04 Exquisite Collection Basketball Rookie Patch Autograph Parallel #08/23 became a coveted item in the basketball card world. The Upper Deck Exquisite Collection, released in 2004, boasted a stellar rookie class featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony.

LeBron’s rookie card from this set, specifically the #78 RPA, holds iconic status among collectors. With only 23 copies in existence, the card is incredibly limited, with a parallel numbered to his jersey number 23 standing out as a rarity. Graded BGS NM+ 7.5 with an Auto grade of 10, this card features a flawless autograph in blue against a white backdrop, accompanied by a two-color swatch. Its rarity and significance in the basketball card community drove the bidding to a staggering $351,029, showcasing the enduring appeal of LeBron’s rookie cards.

Another highlight of the auction was a 2003 Topps Chrome #111 LeBron James rookie card, displaying a black refractor variant. Known for their limited print runs and various refractor versions, LeBron’s 2003 Topps Chrome rookie cards are legendary in NBA memorabilia. The black refractor card in this auction, graded PSA GEM MINT 10, is exceptionally rare, with only 21 copies achieving this top grade. Numbered 326 out of 500, the card’s black borders accentuate any imperfections, making a pristine grade highly sought after. This rare piece fetched an impressive $126,725, solidifying its status as a prized possession for collectors.

The remarkable prices fetched by these LeBron James rookie cards at the Leland’s Summer Classic Auction underscore the unwavering legacy and value of these iconic pieces in the realm of sports memorabilia.
