Card Grading Surge: Ohtani and Stroud Shine in February

The month of February set the stage for a bustling period in the world of card grading, as collectors and investors eagerly submitted over 1.6 million cards for authentication. This surge marked a significant 25% increase from the previous year, indicating a growing interest in the hobby.

Within this flurry of activity, two standout athletes, Shohei Ohtani and CJ Stroud, emerged as the focal points of the grading landscape. Both players garnered immense popularity, with their cards flooding the grading companies for inspection. Ohtani, following his transition to the Dodgers, saw a staggering 26,800 cards pass through the meticulous process at PSA. On the other hand, Stroud’s breakout NFL season propelled his card submissions to 16,400, firmly establishing him as a sought-after figure in the market.

The card grading phenomenon wasn’t exclusive to PSA, as other prominent grading entities such as SGC, ISA Grading, and Beckett Grading also experienced a significant influx of submissions. Modern cards from the 2023 sports season, particularly in football and baseball, dominated the grading scene, showcasing a mix of legendary players like Michael Jordan alongside rising stars like Ohtani and Stroud. Beckett’s notable grading of the 2023 Topps NOW Connor Bedard rookie sticker underscored the diversity and depth of submissions during the period.

This surge in card grading activity sheds light on the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the sports memorabilia market. With talents like Ohtani and Stroud capturing the attention of collectors and investors alike, the industry continues to thrive and expand. The growing interest in both modern and vintage sports cards signifies a promising future for the hobby, offering enthusiasts an exciting journey filled with discoveries and investments.
