REA’s February Auction Sets Vintage Sports Card Records

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run in their latest February auction, raking in over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show was a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card that fetched an impressive $75,000, setting a new record for its version and showcasing the continued allure of rare vintage sports cards.

Not to be outshone, a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series made waves with a PSA GOOD 2 grade, selling for $15,000 and breaking its own condition record. The auction drew in a crowd of registry builders and collectors, with particular interest sparked by the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. The standout performer was a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card, commanding a hefty $19,200 – a record price for a non-Hall of Famer card in its grade from the set.

With a total of 2,732 items on the auction block, REA featured a diverse array of collectibles that appealed to a wide audience. Other top sellers included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 card sold for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 card for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set that went for $12,000, among several other lucrative lots.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed delight at the auction’s success and the enthusiastic engagement from the collector community. He also hinted at exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, hinting at a bright future for the hobby and promising even more thrilling events for sports memorabilia fans.

This recent auction by REA not only solidified the enduring demand and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also paved the way for future events, offering a glimmer of optimism for collectors and enthusiasts. With the Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, providing a platform for excitement and discovery in the world of sports memorabilia.
