Legendary Red Auerbach’s Celtics Memorabilia Hits the Auction Block

Red Auerbach, the man behind the Boston Celtics’ incredible run of nine NBA championships in just eleven years, is a name that reverberates through the basketball community. Now, fans and collectors alike have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of history. Heritage Auctions is hosting an auction featuring items from Auerbach’s most successful season and other personal memorabilia from his illustrious Hall of Fame career. This collection, consigned by the Auerbach family, will make its debut in the highly anticipated Platinum Night event.

One of the key highlights in the auction is Auerbach’s 1965 NBA championship ring, a symbol of the Celtics’ dominant season in which they achieved a remarkable 62-18 record under his guidance. This ring, accompanied by Auerbach’s Coach of the Year Award and his personal league championship trophy from the same season, showcases the pinnacle of his coaching achievements. Another standout item up for auction is the ring he received as the general manager of the Celtics’ 1984 championship team, which is expected to fetch a staggering amount upwards of $100,000.

The 1965 championship season holds historical significance not only for the Celtics’ record but also for Auerbach’s groundbreaking decision to start five African-American players, the first time this had been done in NBA history. In 1996, this team was rightfully recognized as one of the NBA’s ten greatest teams of all time. The 1965 championship ring and trophy carry pre-sale estimates of $80,000 and $30,000, respectively, while the Coach of the Year award is also expected to draw significant interest.

In addition to these remarkable pieces, there are several more personal items included in the auction. Among them is a 1940s Washington Capitols team jacket, believed to be worn by Auerbach during his early coaching days and later signed by him. Additionally, the auction features a unique collection of Auerbach’s smoking pipes, complete with a stand and humidor, offering a glimpse into his personal life and adding a special touch to the memorabilia available.

Other noteworthy lots in the auction include two signed team photos from the 1960-61 season, a Celtics championship watch from 1981, autographed photos of Auerbach with the legendary Bill Russell, a 1960s photo of Bob Cousy signed specifically for Auerbach, and various championship rings and jewelry pieces gifted to his wife and family.

This exciting auction follows a previous sale of Auerbach items in 2011, ensuring that enthusiasts and collectors have yet another opportunity to own a piece of basketball history. The bidding for these rare and historic items will conclude on Friday, February 25th, offering a unique chance for fans and collectors alike to celebrate and cherish the legacy of one of the NBA’s most revered figures. So don’t miss out on this extraordinary chance to own a tangible piece of Red Auerbach’s iconic career and relive the magic of the Boston Celtics’ golden era.
