Rare Baseball Cards in Summer Sports Auction

Heritage Auctions is gearing up for an exhilarating event with their upcoming Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction on July 12-13. The auction will showcase a plethora of rare and highly sought-after baseball cards that will undoubtedly pique the interest of enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Among the standout items up for grabs is a mint-condition 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card, a gem-mint Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card that is sure to attract basketball fans, and a gem-mint chrome rookie card signed by a young Bryce Harper. These cards are not just collectibles but also pieces of sports history that hold immense value to fans.

The auction will also feature sealed packs, boxes, and cases, providing collectors with the opportunity to potentially discover hidden gems. Signed cards of baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani and top-of-the-line Ty Cobb tobacco cards will further add to the allure of this summer auction. Notably, the auction will include Babe Ruth’s famous “Called Shot” jersey, a prized possession for any baseball memorabilia enthusiast.

A highlight of the event is a unique collection of 1959 baseball cards originally stapled to containers of Canadian cookies. These cards, exceedingly rare with only 69 known examples in PSA’s population report, include 37 cards featuring iconic players like Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron. The cards’ rarity and historical significance make them a must-have for avid collectors.

The significance of the Dad’s Cookies cards lies in their connection to sports memorabilia history. These cards were produced by Exhibits Supply Company, a renowned Chicago-based company that evolved from creating arcade postcards to featuring baseball players, boxers, and other personalities. Distributed by Dad’s Cookies in 1959, these cards adorned cookie bags and boxes, each encouraging children to collect all 64 “autographed” pictures of baseball stars. The cards’ scarcity stems from their unconventional distribution method and the limited number of surviving specimens.

The auction will also showcase two highly coveted Ty Cobb T206 cards from the early 1900s. One such card is the El Principe de Gales Ty Cobb, graded PSA NM 7, with only one known example bearing the El Principe de Gales advertisement on the back. The other is the American Beauty Portrait-Red Cobb, graded PSA EX-MT 6, the highest-graded of its kind. These cards hold immense value and are considered prized possessions for T206 collectors.

In addition to individual cards, the auction will offer an array of sealed boxes and cases, including the 1970 Topps Baseball Wax Box (1st & 3rd Series) with 24 unopened packs containing potential treasures such as rookie cards of Carl Yastrzemski and Vida Blue. These items carry both nostalgic and discovery value, as collectors eagerly anticipate unveiling what lies within each pack.

Furthermore, newer boxes and cases like the 2015 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Unopened Case and the 2020 Panini Flawless Football Factory Sealed Case will be up for auction, providing the thrill of uncovering rare cards such as a Connor McDavid rookie card or a gem-mint rookie patch auto. The anticipation and excitement of potentially finding these elusive cards add an element of suspense to the collecting experience.

With a diverse range of rare and valuable cards, sealed packs, and cases, Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction promises to be an unforgettable event for sports memorabilia enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of sports cards, this auction offers a unique opportunity to acquire some of the most coveted items in the industry.
