Heritage Auctions has unveiled a dazzling array of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, with a special focus on images that will resonate deeply with sports card enthusiasts. At the center of this event is a 1948 photo capturing basketball icon George Mikan in action, featuring his signature in blue ink, resembling his iconic 1948 Bowman rookie card. The 8×10 Type 1 photo is expected to command a price exceeding $20,000.
The theme of signed vintage photos continues to shine throughout the auction. A late 1940s photo of Cleveland Browns legend Otto Graham, reminiscent of his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, is embellished with his autograph. Similarly, a signed photo of Jackie Robinson from 1949 portrays him receiving his Silver Bat for his National League batting title win, the same year he clinched the MVP title. This Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds significant historical value.
Another poignant image in the auction showcases Robinson in 1957 as he clears out his locker at Ebbets Field upon retiring from baseball. The photo captures his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, accompanied by two bats, one belonging to Gil Hodges. This remarkable piece is projected to attract bids exceeding $10,000.
Also featured in the auction is a photo believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, complete with Mays’ signature from the 1990s adorning the front.
The auction catalog boasts a diverse collection of over 150 vintage images, with some dating back more than a century. Noteworthy among these is a photo from the 1919 World Series showcasing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shaking hands before a game at Redland Field in Cincinnati, complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the back. This historical gem is estimated to kick off bidding at $8,000.
Among the other standout pieces are rookie photos of Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), as well as various images capturing the essence of sports icons like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war legends.
This auction, which paints a vivid picture of sports history through the lens of photography, is set to run until June 13, providing collectors and sports aficionados alike with a rare chance to own a tangible slice of sporting heritage.
