Rare Christy Mathewson Memorabilia up for Auction

Hunt Auctions is currently showcasing an exceptional assortment of Christy Mathewson memorabilia, offering more than 120 items that provide a fascinating look into the life of the baseball Hall of Famer. From his professional achievements on the field to his personal moments off the diamond, this collection paints a vivid picture of the legendary player’s legacy.

The collection, originally donated to Keystone College by Mathewson’s widow in 1967, encompasses a diverse range of artifacts that showcase the various facets of Mathewson’s life. Known for his outstanding career as a pitcher for the New York Giants, Mathewson’s impact extended beyond his impressive stats, highlighting his esteemed character and leadership qualities both in baseball and in his personal endeavors.

Before rising to fame in the major leagues, Mathewson displayed his athletic prowess at Keystone and later at Bucknell University, where he also exhibited his leadership skills by serving as class president. This auction presents a golden opportunity for fans and collectors to own a piece of history connected to one of baseball’s most iconic figures.

Among the standout items up for bidding is a Carl Horner framed cabinet photo from 1904, a prized possession expected to fetch between $50,000 and $100,000. In addition to this iconic photograph, the auction features a collection of images capturing Mathewson in various baseball card representations and team associations, such as his stint with the 1900 Norfolk Phenoms.

The collection also sheds light on Mathewson’s service during World War I, where he encountered a tragic incident of being exposed to nerve gas during a chemical warfare exercise. The military memorabilia on offer includes his doughboy jacket, a footlocker bearing his handwritten ID, and other valuable items that could garner bids exceeding $25,000, serving as poignant reminders of his wartime contributions.

David Hunt, the President of Hunt Auctions, emphasized the historical significance of the Mathewson Collection, hailing it as one of the most remarkable assemblages ever made available to the public, particularly rare for memorabilia dating back to the Deadball Era. This auction provides a unique chance for enthusiasts to own pieces that encapsulate the essence of a bygone era in baseball history.

In addition to the tangible artifacts, the auction boasts a series of personal letters penned by Mathewson, including a letter addressed to a young fan requesting an autograph, with an estimated value of $10,000-$15,000. These letters offer a glimpse into Mathewson’s compassionate nature and his deep understanding of his influence as a role model, showcasing the humility and integrity that defined his character.

Scheduled to conclude with a live event on June 4, this auction offers a rare opportunity for passionate collectors to acquire memorabilia from the personal collection of a baseball legend, blending sentimental value with historical significance in each item up for bidding.
