Rare Signed Photo of Ruth and Gehrig by Arthur Hull Goes to Auction

In the realm of baseball memorabilia, certain items hold a special place for their historical significance and the stories they tell. One such artifact is a recently discovered photograph signed by baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, captured by renowned photographer Arthur Hull. This meticulously preserved piece, authenticated as a Type 1 original by PSA, offers a glimpse into the unparalleled legacy of two of baseball’s greatest figures.

Arthur Hull, celebrated for his work with prestigious publications like The New York Times and The Associated Press, snapped this photograph during the Yankees’ spring training camp between 1927 and 1931. The image portrays Ruth and Gehrig at a moment when their camaraderie and joy shine through. Signed with great care, the autographs reflect the dedication Hull had towards his craft and his subjects. Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, the auction house in charge of the sale, praises the quality of the autographs and the photograph itself, stating that they are “some of the nicest you’ll find.”

The journey of this photograph to the auction block is a tale of historical preservation and serendipity. Following Hull’s passing in 1969, Karl Allison and a friend acquired his collection, including this signed photograph, from Hull’s widow for a nominal fee. Within their acquisition, they found a treasure trove of negatives and photographs from Hull’s illustrious five-decade career. Among these was the signed photograph of Ruth and Gehrig, which Allison chose to safeguard, storing it away from light and creating a duplicate for display purposes.

Beyond its visual appeal, this photograph holds immense significance as an opportunity to own a piece of sports history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, especially those authenticated as Type 1 originals and in excellent condition, are extremely rare and highly sought-after by collectors. Consequently, the upcoming auction commencing on February 25 is anticipated to generate tremendous interest among enthusiasts and collectors alike. It presents a unique chance for individuals to acquire a tangible slice of baseball’s storied past.

More than just highlighting our enduring fascination with Ruth and Gehrig, this auction underscores the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and commemorating the legends of the sport. As this iconic photograph prepares to find a new home, it continues to celebrate the everlasting legacy of two of baseball’s most beloved figures. Arthur Hull’s lens immortalized them, and their impact on the game and American culture at large perseveres through the decades, resonating with fans of all generations.
